Why I Came Back: Five Things Credit Unions Need Most Right Now

By: Tami Webb

August 05, 2026

Several months ago, I thought I had entered retirement.

Then I attended GAC in March.

What was supposed to be a brief opportunity to represent United Solutions Company quickly became a reminder of why I’ve spent more than four decades in financial services and fintech. Reconnecting with credit union leaders, industry partners, and long-term friends reignited something I hadn’t expected: a renewed passion for helping credit unions succeed.

That experience ultimately led me back to United Solutions Company as Senior Vice President of Sales.

While this article isn’t really about my return, it is about what I observed after stepping away and then re-engaging with the industry. Credit unions continue to face significant challenges, but they also have tremendous opportunities. As I listened to leaders across the country, five themes consistently stood out.

1. Operational efficiency is no longer optional

Credit unions are being asked to do more with limited resources. Rising costs, increasing compliance requirements, and ongoing talent challenges mean efficiency has become a strategic priority rather than simply an operational goal.

The most successful organizations are evaluating every process and asking a simple question: Are we allocating our people and resources where they create the greatest value for members?

2. Technology should support strategy—not drive it

The pace of technological change can feel overwhelming. New platforms, digital tools, AI applications, and payment innovations seem to emerge daily.

However, technology alone doesn’t solve problems. The credit unions seeing the greatest success are those that begin with strategic objectives and member needs, then identify the technology that supports those goals.

The conversation should never start with “What technology should we buy?” It should start with “What problem are we trying to solve?”

3. Member experience remains the ultimate differentiator

Members today compare their credit union experience not just to other financial institutions but to every digital experience they encounter.

Convenience, accessibility, personalization, and responsiveness matter more than ever. Yet the institutions that stand out are those that combine modern digital capabilities with the personal relationships that have always defined the credit union movement.

Technology enables service, but relationships build loyalty.

4. Partnerships are becoming increasingly important

No credit union can be an expert in everything.

The complexity of today’s environment makes strategic partnerships more valuable than ever. Whether it’s technology, compliance, collections, operations, or consulting support, partnering with trusted experts allows credit unions to focus on their core mission while gaining access to specialized expertise.

The strongest organizations recognize that success doesn’t require doing everything themselves.

5. Listening remains the most valuable skill

After more than 40 years in this industry, one lesson continues to prove true: success starts with listening.

Every credit union is unique. Each has different goals, challenges, communities, and opportunities. The best solutions emerge when we take the time to understand those differences before offering recommendations.

Listening builds trust. Trust creates relationships. And relationships ultimately drive results.

Looking ahead

My return to the credit union industry has reminded me why I’ve always valued this community. The challenges are real, but so are the opportunities.

Credit unions have always been resilient, innovative, and deeply committed to serving their members. I believe those strengths will continue to guide the industry forward.

As I begin this next chapter, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces, building new relationships, and continuing to support credit unions as they navigate the opportunities ahead.
