Repairing VS Replacing Your Scanner

August 03, 2017

So, your scanner isn’t working quite right. You’ve had the scanner forever, but aren’t sure whether to buy a new scanner or fix the current scanner. Our Canon Premier Partner Scanner expert Bill Kimbel reveals the secrets to deciding whether it’s time to buy a new scanner or if repairing your current one is the best option available.

Scanners typically become replacement candidates after 4 to 5 years in the field. If any of the following are true for your scanner, then it’s probably time to replace instead of repair.

1. Your current scanner has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Once this happens, you generally have a few years of parts availability, but now would be the time to start looking at new scanners. If you already receive your scanners from USC, then your service or sales contact will always notify you when this does occur.

2. Your current scanner can no longer keep up with your workload. Many new scanners are available with higher performance for the same or lower cost than you previously purchased. A faster scanner can free up more of your time for other tasks. Lower cost scanners can make it easier to spread the workload to additional desktops.

3. You are doing distributed scanning or centralized scanning. A good strategy is to take the scanning to the documents to reduce the costs of transportation and the risk of loss in the mail.

4. You like the newest features on a different scanner. Scanning on both sides with a single pass, auto-rotating, auto-detecting page size, auto-detecting color, etc. Features like these can help you make your archived documents more useable in the future as well as make it easier to scan into a better image.

5. Your current support organization isn’t cutting it.

6. A new scanner could provide you with a trade-in allowance to reduce the cost of acquisition.
